چکیده

Recently much effort has been spent on providing a shared address space abstraction on clusters of small–scale symmetric multiprocessors. However, advances in technology will soon make it possible to construct these clusters with larger–scale cc-NUMA nodes, connected with non-coherent networks that offer latencies and bandwidth comparable to interconnection networks used in hardware cache–coherent systems. The shared memory abstraction can be provided on these systems in software across nodes and in hardware within nodes. In this work we investigate this approach to building future software shared memory clusters. We use an existing, large–scale hardware cache–coherent system with 64 processors to emulate a future cluster. We present results for both 32and 64-processor system configurations. We quantify the effects of faster interconnects and wide, NUMA nodes on system design and identify the areas where more research is required for future SVM clusters. We find that current SVM protocols can only partially take advantage of faster interconnects and they need to be adjusted to the new system features. In particular, unlike in today’s clusters that employ SMP nodes, improving intra–node synchronization and data placement are key issues for future clusters. Data wait time and synchronization costs are not major issues, when not affected by the cost of page invalidations.

Supporting Shared Memory and Message Passing on Clusters of PCs with a SMiLE

With the rise of fast interconnection technologies and new concepts to utilize them without operating system interaction (like VIA 4]), compute clusters are becoming increasingly commonplace. Most of the interconnection networks focus only on message passing as their prime programming model neglecting the large code basis for shared memory. However, by utilizing the Scalable Coherent Interface ...

Semiotics of Collective Memory of the Iran-Iraq War (Holy Defence): A Case Study of the Shared Images in Virtual Social Networks

This study aims to achieve a semiotic understanding of collective memory of the Iran-Iraq war. For this purpose, samples of images in virtual social networks shared in response to the news of discovery and return of the bodies of more than 175 divers have been analyzed. Visual signs in photographs, cartoons, graphic designs, prints, paintings and posters, in methods of historical pictures and f...

Cost-Performance Evaluation of SMP Clusters

Clusters of Personal Computers have been proposed as potential replacements for expensive compute servers. One limitation in the overall performance is the interconnection network. A possible solution is to use multiple processors on each node of the PC cluster. Parallel programs can then use the fast shared memory to exchange data within a node, and access the interconnection network to commun...
